Boron Deficiency Symptoms- Boron deficiency causes growing tips to die, plants are bushy and stunted. Beets are rough, and have cankered patches appear on roots. A brown rot may appear internally. In cabbages the deficiency may cause the leaves to become distorted and the stems may have hollow areas. Boron deficiency in cauliflower causes the curds to develop poorly and may cause brown spots to appear. Stems, leaf stalks and midribs are roughened. The leaf stalks of celery develop cracks on the outer surface and the inner tissue is reddish brown. Rutabagas or turnips develop brown or gray areas, often in concentric rings, often in the lower part of the root. Boron deficiency cause strawberry plants to become stunted, the leaves are small yellow and puckered. The fruits tend to be small and pale.
Causes- A boron soil deficiency is truly rare. It may occur when the bedrock contains granite, which is low in boron. Leaching from light soils during heavy rainfalls, excess liming/high pH and very dry soils may also be the cause. Prevention and Control- Improve moisture retention in soils. Prior to applying any soil treatment; test soil with a pH Soil Tester You can also rake borax into the soil at 1 oz per square yard(35g/square meter) Use a foliar spray on pears (2oz per 5 gal.)/(70g per 22 lit). Soft Rock Phosphate is a powdered form of 100% natural Phosphorous. Soft Rock Phosphate is highly soluble and is perfect for soils that have been depleted of minerals. This soft, rock phosphate provides 27% phosphate, 16% phosphorous, plus 18 trace minerals for maximum growth. The colloidal clay is usable by plants, trees and shrubs. Conclusions- Optimum plant growth response in landscape soils can be gained by making sure plants are provided a reasonable supply of all essential elements.
