Whether you are planning a new garden or revamping an existing one it pays to think organic. An organic garden relies as much on careful planning as the actual gardening its self. Below is some basic information. Ann Lovejoy''s Organic Garden Design School as a good further reference.

Site Assessment- consider the soil type, fertility and condition. Soil tests kits are readily available. Look for compacted areas, wet or dry conditions. Examine existing vegetation for clues. See managing soil organically for further information.

Observe the position of the sun throughout the day. Identify hot spots, high shade spots. Note the prevailing wind direction to see where wind breaks may be necessary.

Consider the relationship between your garden and its surroundings. Look for unsightly buildings or objects that may need screening.. Or maybe there are views or objects that will add to the garden which could become a focal point.. Consider a pond or water feature if you have the space.. They can add a natural look and incredible beauty to your yard. Assess existing landscape for wildlife potential.

Watch out for drains, pipes, or cables and make a note of their location. If you will need access to any of these items in the future make sure you mark them well.

Living spaces- besides looking good an organic garden should be practical. Fresh herbs for example should be planted near a kitchen door or a location with easy access.

Productive areas- nothing tastes better than home grown fruits and vegetables. You may want a separate vegetable garden but if not all these items can be incorporated into a flower garden. Organic gardens are all about diversity. If you are looking for a formal layout you can edge the beds with annual flowers and herbs. These are also beneficial as they attract predatory insects.

Composting
and other recycling green garden waste, weeds, old plants, leaves and kitchen scraps are essential in any organic garden. Compost bins come in a variety of sizes and designs to suit all size properties such as the Compost Digester - so composting does not have to be an unsightly process. Different types of composting can include leaf mold piles, green garden waste, and worm compost for kitchen wastes.
