Fenugreek
Trigonella foenum-graecum

Fenugreek is a member of the papilionaceae family; it is an annual that will grow up to 24 in (60cm) in height; resembling sweet clover in its early stages before developing fragrant white flowers. These develop into long pointed pods, which contain the brown seeds.

Fenugreek is also known as Bird’s Foot or Greek Hayseed. It is one of the oldest and most widely used herbs, most commonly used in Indian cookery. The fenugreek plant produces celery like yellow-brown seeds, which are a common ingredient in chutneys and curried dishes. The leaves are most commonly used in their dried form but can be used fresh if they are still quite young as they do become bitter with time.

Ideal Site-
Fenugreek prefers full sun, fertile, well-drained, neutral to slightly acid soil. Prior to planting prepare the site with a medium-fertility soil improver. Ideal pH 6.5-7.0

Seed to Harvest-
90-120 days.

Cultivation-
Fenugreek needs a hot climate to successfully germinate, flower and seed. Outdoors: In spring, after the threat of frost has passed, sow seeds to a depth of a little less than a ¼ in (25mm). The seeds sprout quickly. Unlike many other herbs that thrive on neglect, fenugreek likes fertile soil, so be generous with the compost. Thin seedlings to 5-6 in (12-15 cm) apart.

Spacing- Rows-
12in (30cm) x 5-6in (12-15cm). Block planting: 6in (15cm)

Plant Care-
Keep plants well watered, mulch with compost or Organic Compost Plus to help retain soil moisture. Keep plants in check as fenugreek self seeds and can quickly overtake a garden.

Problems- Fenugreek is usually trouble free

Harvesting-
Harvest and dry seedpods in early to mid fall, and store them in an airtight container in a dry, dark spot.

Uses-
Fenugreek is most commonly as a spice in Indian cooking for curries and chutneys. It is also can be taken internally or used topically. It is most often used to treat coughs and sore throat, although current research suggests that it may be effective in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes, can help lower blood cholesterol, and increase circulation. Fenugreek is also often recommended as an herbal treatment for tinnitus
