Growing plants can be a fascinating undertaking with many benefits, especially for the organic gardener. Propagation can be carried out in all sorts of situations and at many different scales. Most equipment required is relatively inexpensive and easy to obtain. You can even produce seed itself in your own garden.

There are two main methods of propagation:

1) Vegetative – taking cuttings, for example, which will produce plants that are genetically identical to the parent. This is typically done thru division, stem cuttings, root cuttings, softwood cuttings, semi-ripe cuttings, hardwood cuttings and layering. Vegetative propagation mean growing a whole plant from part of a plant. This can be done with all plants except annuals or biennials.

2) Seeds – sowing seed produces more varied results, especially if you save your own seed from the garden. The diversity in the plants produced is all part of the fun and is more in line with nature.The secret to successful propagation is to understand the basics.

By giving your seeds or cuttings the best possible conditions, the return will be healthy vibrant plants. Correct temperature, moisture, light levels, and ventilation are all crucial. A greenhouse and a heated bench or a Heat Mat will open up all kinds of possibilities, but if that is not possible a sunroom and windowsills will do just fine. Many seeds can be planted directly outdoors.





Why propagate your own plants-

1) It is fascinating, enjoyable and quite rewarding endeavor. Much can be learned from propagating your own plants


2) Avoids pests and pesticides. Many commercially produced plants are regularly treated with chemicals that you do not want in your garden or home. By growing your own you are assured that you are not introducing chemicals into your organic garden. Garden plants can also harbor pests such as vine weevils

3) Save Money-Growing plants from seed or cuttings will save you money. Seed from 1 tomato or Cucumber plant will grow dozens of new plants. Many cuttings can be produced from a single plant.


4) Extend the Range- Organically grown plants and seeds are available but the range is still limited. By raising your own you can extend the range. Many rare and unusual varieties of fruits, vegetables and ornamentals are impossible to obtain from seed companies and nurseries.

5) Think locally, this will reduce transportation costs by growing plants you need where you need them instead of relying on expensive and environmentally damaging deliveries from far away.
