Leeks
Allium porrum

 Leek - Organic   $1.89 USD
Leeks are a hardy crop for autumn and winter harvest. They do not take up much space, and are generally easy to grow. Leeks can be harvested over a long period and they will stay in the ground in good conditions for many months. Their strong root system does wonders for soil structure.

Earlier cultivars for late summer and early summer are usually taller, slimmer and less hardy than later cultivars. Use shorter, fatter leek cultivars for late autumn and winter crops. A few cultivars have decorative purple foliage. Can be grown as mini leeks, a mild alternative to spring onion. Heirloom Leek - American Flag   is an old heirloom favorite.

Ideal Site- Leeks grow best in an open location with fertile soil that retains moisture, but does not become waterlogged in winter. Prior to planting prepare the site with high-fertility soil improver or medium-fertility soil improver if following a pea crop; or a low-fertility soil improver with a nitrogen-fixing organic fertilizer. The ideal soil pH is 6.5-7.5
