Minzua Greens & Mibuna Greens Brassica rapa var. nipposinica
Mizuna greens and Mibuna greens are closely related to each other, and grow more or less the same way.The Mibuna greens are less vigorous and less tolerant of heat and cold. They are attractive leafy crops with a mild mustard flavor, eaten raw or cooked. The green feathery leaves can be cut as a seedling crop, picked individually from larger plants, or cut as a whole head. Both Mizuna and Mibuna greens make a pretty edging. Ideal Site- Minzua and Mibuna need a firm moisture retentive soil, they will not thrive where moisture is limited. Minzua and Mibuna prefer an open sunny site. Summer crops can tolerate light shade. These crops are good for interplanting when kept small. Both greens are suitable for winter cropping under cover in greenhouses or hoop houses.. No soil treatment is needed if site was improved by a previous crop. If the site has light soil, use a low to medium soil-improver prior to planting. The ideal soil ph is 6.5-7 Seed to Harvest- Seedling crop is about 3 weeks; semi-mature plants 6-8 weeks; mature plants 8-10 weeks
Cultivation- The minimum germination temperature for Minzua and Mibuna greens is 45F (7C). Undercover: Sow in cell packs from Mar/April for transplanting outside. Sow direct or in cell packs September to March for growing undercover. Outside: Sow from April until August.
Spacing- Seedling cutting crop: Sow thinly in bands or patches. Semi-mature plants: 4-8 in. (10-20cm). Mature Plants: 12in (30cm).
Plant Care- Be sure to keep the soil moist at all times, water during dry periods. Problems- Clubroot, slugs, flea beetle, When flea beetle is a problem, grow under row covers or fine mesh netting.
