Preventive measures can never be rigorous enough to eliminate the need for some weeding. The key is to do the weeding when the weeds are small. Only when you put it off does it become a chore. Hand clearing neglected ground can be a taxing chore but knowing your weeds will help. Some tested strategies can beat some of the most persistent perennial weeds.
Hand Weeding- is the only selective organic method of weed control, allowing you to remove the real weeds while allowing you to retain self-sown ornamentals. Use a hand fork or weeding to loosen weeds when necessary
.
Even annual weeds will re grow if only the tops are pulled off. Hand weeding is easiest after a rain storm and on un-compacted soil beds that are well mulched. Paths and patios can be hand-weeded. There is a range of tools available to help extract weeds from cracks between paving slabs
Hoeing- Once learned the technique is quick and effective method of keeping grounds and beds weed-free. Hoeing works best against seedling weeds both annual and perennial, but it can be effective in removing the tops of perennial weeds. Through regular hoeing over a period of time the weeds will be killed completely. Hoes come in many shapes and sizes- for large or restrictive areas, and for use while standing or kneeling.
Thermal Weeding- is the process of removing weeds with a short blast of heat lasting no more than a few seconds. The weeds do not burn, they simply wilt and die. The heat maybe applied as a flame, hot air or even as steam. The main use for thermal weeders in the organic garden is on hard surfaces such as paths, patios and sidewalks. Seedlings weeds are easily killed with a single pass. Many established annual and perennial weeds may need between 3-6 treatments. Thermal treatment can also kill weed seeds on the ground
