Weevils

Weevils are beetles with a characteristic snout and clubbed antennae. There are many varieties of weevils and they range in size from  1/16 in (2mm) to 1 in.(2.5 cm), depending on the species. The larvae have a soft white body and an obvious head but are otherwise featureless.

Some of the different species include black vine, pea and bean, nut, alfalfa, grain, Japanese, carrot, cucumber, strawberry root, boll, pecan,  Picea, Pinus, Salix, chestnut, parsley, and pepper weevils.

Susceptible Plants- A wide range of plants, grains and trees

Symptoms-
vary from species and plants affected by weevils. Nut weevils cause two types of damage; mid-season adult feeding on young nuts causing premature nut drop, and grub damage to the kernels that usually occurs after shell hardening.

Boll weevils attack cotton crops, Root weevils cause serious damage to strawberry, grape, apple, peach, arborvitae, pine, and spruce seedlings, Bean and pea weevils affect papilionaceae crops eating leaves, and fruit. Carrot weevils affect carrots and other root vegetables.

In general larvae and adult weevils attack leaves, fruits, nuts, stems, roots, flowers, and needles of the plant or tree causing serious damage or killing young plants or seedlings.

Prevention and Control- is dependant on the type of weevil. Some general measures include using floating row covers for crops such as strawberries, peas, and beans. Parasitic nematodes can be used to kill larvae in the soil. For severe cases Bonide Rotenone And Pyrethrum  can be used to kill leaf-feeding adults.

For fruit and nut trees those not prepared to spray can reduce weevil injury by periodically shaking weevils onto a harvesting sheet. Dislodged beetles usually remain motionless on the sheet and can be easily collected and destroyed. Shaking should begin after the first heavy rain in early August and continue through mid-September or until no weevils are collected.

Biological Control- Beneficial Nematodes - H. bacteriophora of weevil larvae.
